Tactical Ranch Tests Mega Arms MATEN .308 Rifle

Retired Special Forces Sergeant Major Tom Buchino, Owner of Covenant Special Projects (CSP) - Tactical Ranch®, gave us a sneak preview of his testing of a new high end .308 rifle.

As owner and operator of Tactical Ranch®, 350 acre firearms and tactics training facility located in El Paso, TX) me and our team of former SOF guys often get the opportunity to T&E firearms and tactical gear for companies servicing this ever emerging industry. Just prior to Christmas our friends at Mega Arms , of Tumwater, Washington. sweetened the holiday season by sending us their MATEN (pronounced: MAH TEN). Now MEGA ARMS does not normally build complete weapon systems, (instead providing separate components (uppers, lowers, barrels, rails, trigger, grips, etc.) for that truly customized rifle everyone wants) however; Jason (at Mega Arms) took the time and attention to every detail and built us the whole enchilada.

The MATEN, equipped with diamond hex iron sights was zeroed and confirmed to group at sub-MOA at 100 yards. Then I engaged steel at 100, 150, 200, 250, 300,350, 400, 500 and 600 yards effectively. My limitation for pressing past 600 was not the gun, weather or ammunition supply, I hate to say it was my vision. I could not see anything past the 600 yard mark (even IPSC steel painted neon orange; sucks to get older)... For my last shoot I loaded two 5 round magazines (Hornady 168 gr. TAP) and fired 9 out of 10 at the 600 yard IPSC target. Not bad for iron sights.

Simply put, the MATEN performs. Can't wait until we get some glass on the rifle; then we will see it's true value.
