Chapter Meeting Notes - 17 August 2013

New Members: Ed Pence, Robert Pratt (USASMA class 64), John Lane (Chapter 38 Transfer).

Members in Distress: Chapter needs 100% accountability to make sure we are in the loop and not let a brother get sick or pass without our knowledge. Please have your family m embefs let us knwo if you are sick, injured, hospitalized or just need some help.

8th Annual CSM(R) John McLaughlin Memorial Golf Tournament: Chaired by Greg Brown. Tournament will be on 7 September at the Fort Bliss Underwood course. All teams have signed up and we are full.

Fort Bliss R and R Center: Chapter donates $200 each month for arts & crafts. Chuy is getting a machine donated from People Inc.

Chapter Swag: Chapter IX Shirts, Coins, Mugs & Blazers are available. Coins are $10 each. Anyone needing a blazer needs to talk to Pete. We are also selling golf balls for $2.00 each, hats for $10.00, cups for $7.00 and green Chapter 9 shirts for $35.00. Brian Kanof took orders for deliver in September of the new Chapter shirt option - these are long and short sleve button down shirts with the Chapter logo as well as a polo shirt made from a different fabric.

SFA 9 Sign on the road: SFA 9 will pay for a 4 x 8 foot sign once the VFW approves it. Numerous groups will be on the sign and share the costs.

SF Room at VFW: Negotiations continue – no decision yet. We want to build a room onto the existing structure that will be available for use by the VFW. We selected an engineer to begin plans and are getting quotes.

Soldier Mentors Program: Mentor program is in progress with the El Paso Courts system for Soldiers who have no violent offenses for 8-12 months. See Tom Brady.

Veterans Summit: 62 organizations are now involved.

USASMA Class 64: Class has statred and we have met a few of the Sergeant Major students – some are joining SFA 9. Honorary Member Chris Lewis is one of the students and arrived recently.

Wounded Warrior Raffle: Pete is selling tickets for SFCA 46. Raffle in 2013.

Stagecoach: Pete bought a 2 ½ foot sculpture of a stagecoach for $600 as a thank you for all the support for the McLaughlin’s and Stagecoach over the years.

Message from the President:

This is the last week before our big money raiser, the 8th Annual John McLaughlin Memorial Golf Tournament and we need your support. Out next and FINAL meeting for this event is this Wednesday, 4 Sep at 5:30 for a last minute meeting; 6:30 pack bags and somewhere around 7:00 pm we’ll brief all volunteers on what they will be doing in the day’s leading up to the tournament as well as the day of. A brief description of duties that we’ll need bodies on; Pack bag’s, secure bags, get them transported to the golf course NLT 0630on Saturday; arranging signs, set-up inside area for registration, Pick-up ice from ready Ice (around 0530), set-up drink station, putting contest, hotdog stand, drink carts, signs for hole sponsors, spotters at the designated hole in one contest…these are just a few that I can think off the top.

I would like to thank LULAC for the invitation to the Fiesta de las Flores, Military Appreciation dinner on Sep 1st; Great night with great hero’s. Members from SFA Chapter 9, 82nd Airborne, VFW Post 812, and other leaders from various veterans’ organizations we’re present. Five soldiers from Fort Bliss were honored for their service and actions in combat by US Congress man Beto O’ Rourke, the Fort Bliss Garrison Commander, Brant Dayley and County Commissioner, District 2, Sergio Lewis. Congressman O’ Rourke was to present a token of appreciation from the city to the parents of SSG Joshua Mills, 7th Special Forces GP who was KIA on September 16, 2009 in Afghanistan but the parents were unable to attend. Master of Ceremony was our very own John Ceballos of the 82nd Airborne Chapter. Job well done.
