2013 Jerry P. Rainey Scholarship Winners

On Saturday 17 August 2013, Chapter IX presented the annual Jerry P. Rainey scholarships - two each $1,000 awards and one $500 award to deserving local college students. Scholarship Chairman Greg Brown did the presenting along with Mrs. Carol Rainey, widow of Jerry P. Rainey. Shown in the picture (L to R) is Salvador Porras, Carol Rainey and Reena Beggs.

Jennifer Urban-Flores is a student at UTEP who recently completed her undergraduate degree, with a major in History and minor in both Humanities and Secondary Education. Jenny is now enrolled in a Masters program. Upon completion of her Master’s degree she plans to enter the education field as a history teacher. Her community service includes many hours working with the city elections department and volunteering at the Nazareth Hall Nursing.

Salvador Porras is a student at El Paso Community College and UTEP working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He served in the Army Reserve as a combat medic, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and his uncle. Salvador deployed to Germany as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2006. He is a founding member of a veterans group; Traviezos Motorcycle Club, which conducts fund raisers to assist the local community, to include The Center Against Family Violence, The Children’s Hospital, The March of Dimes, and the Lee and Buelah Moor Children’s Home, among others.

Reena Beggs is currently enrolled at UTEP and is majoring in Biochemistry with the goal of becoming a pathologist. She is a member of the University Honors Program and a member of the Medical Professionals Organization. Through the Honors Program she was admitted into the Student Leadership Institute during her freshman year and eventually became the University Honors Council President. One of her responsibilities as president was to prepare the annual Fall Festival at the Reynolds Home women’s shelter.
